New Changes to Sapphire Cards

Updated: 9 hours ago

First things to note

  • You cannot hold Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® at the same time, but they are no longer subject to the 48 month rule. So if have one open, you can downgrade it after a year to a no-annual fee card and then open the other one.

  • You will not be eligible for the Preferred or the Reserve bonus if you’ve held them before. Once in a lifetime is the new rule.

  • Business cards are not subject to the same rules as the Sapphires so you can continue to open them again and again.

  • A new concept called Points Boost will be replacing the current 1.25 cents/point value (for the Preferred) and 1.5 cents/point value (for the Reserve) when redeeming points through Chase Travelâ„ .

New business card with a huge bonus!Earn 200,000 bonus points after you spend $30,000 on purchases in your first 6 months from account opening.

This brand new card that won't count towards your 5/24-the rule Chase has where you won't qualify for anymore of their cards if you open more than 5 personal cards in 24 months from any bank. Once a card falls out of the window of 24 months, and you drop below 5/24, you can qualify for Chase cards again. Business cards from Chase don't count towards that number but you have to be below 5/24 to qualify.

The annual fee is $795 which is a lot. There are a lot of credits to offset the fee. I personally don't love coupon clipping the annual fees but usually think it's worth it the first year if the bonus is solid and in this case the bonus is very solid!

The minimum spending it a lot. But if you can do $5,000 a month over 6 months, this is a good card for you!

Also comes with complimentary access to Chase Sapphire Lounges and Priority Pass lounges for you and 2 guests free.

Earn 100,000 bonus points plus a $500 Chase Travel promo credit after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. The promotional credit is valid for a one-time use only, if you apply the promotional credit to a transaction less than $500, you will forfeit the remaining balance. If a portion of your purchase is cancelled due to an issue with the service provider, you will receive a new promotional credit for the amount cancelled.

Annual fee is $795. The promo credit of $500 makes this card worth it to me for right now. That and the $300 travel credit it comes with make it worth it for one year. Typically I don't know if even with the coupon clipping, I would want to pay this annual fee.

If you already hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, (now at 75,000 points!) previously you could not hold both cards within a 4 year period but now you can supposedly have both at the same time!-I just tested that out by applying though and was denied-then called the bamk and they said you can't hold both at the same time and must wait 4 years between the bonuses.

My Thoughts

These cards aren't for everyone, especially with the higher spending and annual fees. With that in mind, I'd make sure you have all 3 Ink business cards first that have much lower annual fees,-$95 and $0! As well as the Sapphire Preferred now offered at 75,000 miles and only a $95 annuual fee.

I would think I'll go for the business card at some point, if I ever have 30k expenses over 6 months that I could manage.
